Company of Musicians
This is a new gallery and there are more images in progress.
Music is universal and as old as humanity. There are prehistoric rock gongs in the British Museum that were found in Africa which produce different notes depending on where they are struck.
Researchers into ancient instruments have worked on how the music of the Ancient Greeks and Egyptians would have sounded. I would love to hear the music that this Company make but I only have a cigar box guitar to play.
Going forward many centuries there were many instruments with wonderful, evocative names. Here are a few early ones, the names of which are lyrical in themselves:
Mandora, Crumhorn, Shawm, Sackbut, Virginal, Serpent, Hurdy-Gurdy, Bladder pipe, Viola pomposa, Oboe d’amour.
